Of Italian descent, Sophie Zénon was born in Normandy in 1965. Trained as an historian and ethnologist, she became a photographer in 2004. At the same time as carrying out her personal work, she also works on commissions from institutions. She lives in Paris.
Her work has earned her ever-growing recognition, her photographs having been shown in several galleries and museums as well at numerous festivals in France, China, Taiwan, Portugal, Russia, Bangladesh, and Cambodia. Her work has been acquired by private collectors and public institutions including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
An inveterate traveller, she has crisscrossed Asia on a number of occasions, in particular, Mongolia (Haïkus mongols, 1996-2006), far-eastern Siberia (Suite sibérienne, 2000-02), and Cambodia (Roads over Troubled Water, 2005-09). Since her first exhibition in 2000, Sophie Zénon has created a universe of great delicacy and seeming calm. Her panoramic photographs featuring deep blacks and heavy grain bear witness « to a rare talent for grasping life, without ever giving way to the picturesque, exoticism or the spectacular » (Philippe Dagen).
Sophie Zénon alternates between work of a documentary nature and the approach of a visual artist with the same fascination for what touches on ritual, the sacred, and mystery. Her universe is tinged with magic, as if shamanism - the subject of her university studies - had the power to suddenly appear in her images. She is currently working on a vast project on the representation of the body after death in the West - In Case We Die -, in which she raises questions about the distance that has grown up between classic works, familiar in their approach to death, and us since the mid-20th century. How, in the present-day context of denial of death, does one depict the undepictable?
She has published six books since 2004.
